The most extreme Arctic outbreak in U.S. history occurred in February 1899. The cold wave first hit the west coast in early February. Temperatures in Seattle bottomed out at –12°F on February 3rd. By the 6th, San Diego fell to 34°F. And, by the morning of the 8th, temperatures along the Gulf Coast fell into the 20s. Fort Logan, Montana hit –61°F on the 11th, while Washington, D.C. recorded an “all-time” low of –15°F. On February 13th, Tallahassee, Florida bottomed out at –2°F, setting a new stat
